When I was 12 years old, I first walked in to the Canton Table Tennis Club in the basement of the local YWCA. For nearly three hours that night, I battled against the best Canton club guys including Rick Akers, Terri Weaver, Roy Dietz, Darrel Shiffano, Don Varian, and many others. I got crushed by everyone, but I received a warm welcome and many people played me. For the next couple years, I played once per week against these friendly opponents. When I was 15-16 years old, the Canton Club closed temporarily for renovations. Each Tuesday, Rick Aker’s would drive me to Akron to play at Patterson Park for a few hours once per week. During this time, I made my biggest improvement going from 1100-2100 in just 2 years. It was from the friendship of Rick and others that encouraged me enough to continue my career with 3 years of professional playing in Canada with the National Team before I eventually made the US National Team and represent our country at international tournaments like the World Championships, Final World Olympic Qualifier, and other prestigious events.
As we open the NEW Samson Dubina Table Tennis Academy here in Akron Ohio, we are thrilled that Rick Akers and his team of experts have again come along side of us and helped us take table tennis to the next level here in Ohio. With the support of Aker’s Signs, we hope to become the fastest growing full-time table tennis academy in the US!
