Sample Analysis for Online Student

I'm looking forward to coaching you online!

Thanks for sending the YouTube links to your videos.  Based on the matches that I watched this morning, I'm listing 2 primary categories of observations and 1 category of the initial training plan for lesson one...

Stronger Points - What I Feel That You Are Doing Well and Need to Continue Working On!
1. Forehand Opening Quality and Placement - I'm very impressed with your ability to find good positioning, waiting until slightly after the top of the bounce, and drive through the ball with excellent spin and placement!  We are going to continue developing this strength - this is a core foundational aspect to your game!
2.  Pendulum Serves - Your deep sidespin pendulum serves are quite fast and spinny.  We are going to work on tactically deciding which serve to serve and the follow-up scenarios afterwards.
3.  Windshield Wiper Serves - These serves are quite effective.  The amount of spin that you can produce is amazing.  I would like to continue developing these as well as add a heavy topspin kicker with it.
4.  Push Quality - The placement, spin, and depth of your deep pushes really set up your game well.  Some of your opponents are scared to loop your heavy push, so they push back which plays perfectly into your strong forehand loops!
5.  Blocking at a Specific Depth - When the opponent loops to your deep backhand, your stability and placment of your block are excellent.  We are going to apply the same principles, same feeling, same positioning, same timing to all of your other blocks to ensure that you are solid on all parts of the table.  Included with this is also learning to make excellent decisions with when to use passive block, when to use active block, when to use counterloop, etc...
6.  Lefty - I was very impressed with your lefty skill!  For like 30 seconds, I couldn't believe that you could play so well left-handed.  Then I realized that the logos were reversed in the distant background and the video was reversed!  I enjoyed watching your videos.  Keep sending them over!

Weaker Points - Where We Need to Possibly Make Changes!
1.  Backhand Opening - When your opponent pushes deep to your backhand, typically you push back or pivot.  I tell all of my online students that they need to either have a strong pivot with good footwork or need to develop a backhand opening loop.  Because your footwork is less-developed, I would highly recommend that you begin working on your backhand opening loop asap.  Do you need to backhand loop every deep push?  No.  You can still use some pushes and some pivots.  But the development of the backhand loop is one of the top priorities for now, so that you have the option to use it in matches.
2.  Recovery After Strong Forehand - When the opponent pushes deep and you make your opening loop, the body position finishes high, and the recovery is a bit off balance.  We are going to work on staying more balanced for the opening loop and recovery directly afterwards.
3.  Mental Preparedness to Get Ready - When you hit normal shots, your sequencing is good.  When you go for a stronger shot, there is a bit of a pause, which causes a delay in recovery.  Be ready for the ball to come back.  Simple principle and you will really improve when you apply it!
4.  Linking the Shots - Right now, most of your rallies are quite short.  However, we need to link 2-3 levels in advance.  Your higher-level opponents will be able to return your strong forehands.  As you are able to improve your balance, your recovery, your readiness for the ball to come back, and your fitness, you will be fully prepared to play deeper into the rallies.
5.  Decisions on Short Game - Right now, your deep push is very very advanced.  The short push and flip or less advanced.  The main thing that we need to work on first is depth awareness.  As you can see the depth, you will be able to make good decisions.  You have the ability to use short push and flip, but because you haven't developed the depth awareness well enough, often I feel that you resort to deep push.  In a match, tactically you need to do what is necessary to win the tournament match.  Developmentally, we need to develop more short-game tools (like flip and short push) to have more weapons available.
6.  Anti Tactics -  I enjoyed watch your match against the anti opponent.  In your next lesson, we will discuss the tactics.  I'll give you a hint now...  As you develop more confidence on your deep push, you will get a much easier return on the next ball.  Your push is really good, we just need to make sure that it is the right type of push against anti!

First Priorities For Now
#1 Establish a consistent robot training routine with structured drills and measurable results.  Initially, we will be working on foundational strokes, linking those strokes together with both systematic and random footwork drills, developing a backhand loop against backspin and understanding how and when to use it in match play.
#2 Establish a consistent fitness session that you can do for 10-15 min directly after your robot session.  This fitness routine will be without equipment focusing mainly on strength, speed, and coordination with the legs and core.
#3 To continue playing matches and get feedback on the training - what aspects are carrying over to results and what aspects aren't carrying over.  At least 1-2 times per month, I would love to see your personal notes and video links from your matches!

ITTF Coach Samson Dubina
Learn Table Tennis - ONLINE

During the last 15 years, I have been blessed with the opportunity to coach many players - recreational to national champions.  Some are kids, some teens, some adults, and some seniors.  After closing the Samson Dubina TT Academy, I have now shifted to sharing my table tennis knowledge to players worldwide with live, personalized, online coaching.

Yes, I now have openings.
Yes, I'm available to give you an online lesson.

Everything that we work on together will be accumulative.
Here is the adventure that we will go on together...

Step 1
Your goals.  Yes, we will have an interactive discussion about your short term, medium term, and long term goals.

Step 2
Your commitment.  We will talk about your weekly schedule and your opportunities to improve.

Step 3
Your progress.  We will discuss ways of measuring your progress, overcoming obstacles, developing a playing system, strengthening your strong points, and reaching your peak potential.

Step 4
The Sessions.  I highly suggest 1 or 2 online lessons per week.  Between lessons, you will have assigned training sessions to maximize your improvement and test your skills.

Pitfalls
Yes, there are several pitfalls to avoid.  The first pitfall is to think that you cannot improve with online lessons.  You truly can improve.  I have given over 700 online lessons to people around the world and these students have seen results - measured results!  The second pitfall is thinking that just one lesson will do it.  It won't.  Everything that you are learning is accumulative.  I'm personally looking for major improvement over the course of weeks and months, not minutes.  This is the reason that I have the price structure designed to give you excellent discounts with long-term commitments.  Why?  Because I'm interested in seeing major progress.  This will only happen with a long-term plan.  The final pitfall to avoid is thinking that Samson will do everything for you.  I won't.  It will take much effort on your part with weekly notes, weekly discipline to follow a structured training program, and the mental focus to remember and apply what you are learning.
